Midlife and Boredom

One of my clients asked, “I have too much to do and too many people to take care of. So, why do I feel BORED with my life?"

I can relate. Your day is filled with work, family, school, chores, errands, budgets, blah, blah, blah. And on top of all that, you know you should squeeze in some exercise and eat right.


No wonder some of us go full steam ahead into a midlife crisis!

With all of the so-called responsibilities of life, our world becomes monotonous, tedious and uninteresting. It’s not that we don’t have enough to do! Boredom comes from not having anything to do that gets you revved up and fills you with joyful anticipation.

Boredom is a side effect of feeling discontent and unfulfilled, and it happens when you can’t do the things you really want to do.

So, how do you fix it?

Well, some great options are to take a vacation, get a hobby, meditate, get a new job or join a club. But If you’ve tried all of that and you’re still bored, then it’s time that you consider this...

Stop thinking that your life stinks!

​It is all about your attitude, my friends. If you’re waking up and dreading the events of the day, then you're setting yourself up for misery. You’ll be bitter about what you have to do and resent who you have to do it for.

It’s important to understand that YOU are the creator of your negative attitude and your boredom. That’s a hard pill to swallow for some.

Humor me for a moment with this little exercise, and you’ll see what I mean.

Write down 5 things you LIKE about every activity you have today
and each person you help.
When you are finished, notice how you feel.
Better, right?

(Now, if you think that this a stupid exercise, then you REALLY need to do it!)

Most folks will feel better after doing that exercise. It’s a classic tool to help you shift your thinking/feeling/attitude from negative to positive. Practicing appreciation and gratitude for what you have will help you see your world from a new perspective. A positive outlook leads to greater inner peace, more fulfillment, and LESS BOREDOM.
